Here at Touch of Curl I've shared so much with my readers! From Madeline's birth story, to the photos from our incredible wedding in Paris, I love bringing you along on our many adventures as a family! Sharing stories from our life on this blog and hearing positive feedback from so many of you has been such a gratifying experience.
With that in mind, I'm thrilled to share our newest adventure with you all, and it's a major one! One that has been in the works for years and years. We're moving to Sausalito, California!
Sausalito is a part of the San Francisco bay area, and in case you have not noticed from how often we have been visiting lately (posts here and here) we love it there! The small seaside town is located directly north of the Golden Gate bridge, and can easily be reached by ferry from SF as well! It's an extraordinary place which we are so excited to make our forever home!
This may come as a shock, but the decision to move has been on our minds since before Josephine was born. Matthew and I are both from families that moved around often in our adolescence, and we have spent the last 3 years searching for the perfect place to raise our children. Our plan has always been to find our 'forever home' before Josie has reached kindergarten to avoid any moving while the kids are enrolled in school. It's a decision we did not take lightly, and we had many diverse characteristics to look for in a new city. Minneapolis is so great! And it's a pretty high bar to set when trying to find somewhere that can compete with the excellent schools, vibrant city life and family & friends we will be missing back home. Over the last three years we have directed all travel and vacations towards locations we were considering for our move. And in our search, over and over we kept returning to the Bay Area. After our last couple of trips, we knew we had found our home.
Sausalito is a town built into a hill, on the ocean, which means a picture perfect spot for a family who lives to be outside moving around! We found an incredible home on top of a hill, with a perfect 15 minute walk down into town to get coffee in the morning, or some after dinner ice cream once the girls are a little older! It's a 15 minute drive to Muir Woods, 20 minutes into the city of San Francisco, and the Marin Headlands are minutes from our backyard for endless hiking trails, it really has everything.
We plan to make our official move in January of 2018 after spending the holidays in Minnesota with family! But hold on - before we make the move to Sausalito next year (in another piece of exciting news!) we will be spending 6 months living in Nice, France starting this June!
You may remember Nice is where we took our honeymoon last summer, and we absolutely fell in love. It's an incredible place for families, and we are beyond thrilled to have the chance to spend a large chunk of time there. Matthew and I are passionate travelers and have long entertained the thought of living abroad, considering it often as we discussed where we would eventually end up raising our girls. We discussed Paris at length, but as much as we adore the city, we never felt it fit our families needs well enough, then we found Nice!
We have always shared a desire to raise our children as bilingual and have worked to expose them to as many different languages and cultures as possible. We're so excited to fully immerse ourselves and our daughters in French culture, while also exploring nearby Italy and many other locations along the way!
Spending 6 months (or forever if you ask Matthew, who thinks we'll never come back!) abroad will be an experience I cannot begin to imagine. From speaking a foreign language to experiencing full immersion into a different culture, it will be an unforgettable time in our lives. Josie will be enrolled in the local preschool, and we're so excited to see how her French develops!
So if you've been wondering where I have been these last few months when the blogging has been a little slow, there you have it! Planning a move for our family overseas (securing Visas, bank accounts, getting our home ready, endless paperwork for preschool) is an overwhelming undertaking. Matthew has taken the lead in most logistical projects, but trust me, its all endless and exciting!
I cannot believe how much our lives are about to change over the next year! I've never moved away from my family and friends, and I know it's going to be both thrilling and challenging as we navigate our new lives abroad and in California! Thank you for following along, and I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you!
