Thank you to Kathryn from Chic & Shimmer for nominating me for the Liebster Award! This is just a fun way for my readers to get to know me and my blog a little better, while also getting to know some of the other awesome blogs I follow! I was sent 10 questions to answer and instructed to nominate 10 other blogs that I love!
Here are the questions I was sent -
1. Do you have any specific goals for the New Year? (Hello 2016!)
Normally I'm not much of a new years resolution person, but this year I actually do have a few goals and things I have been putting off on starting!
Our wedding is set for early August and I am on a mission for 'wedding arms!' I lost the weight relatively quickly after having Josie so I'm not so worried about the weight, but I never put too much of a focus on getting back into my pre-baby shape. When Matthew and I first met, I was doing yoga 4-5 times each week and in the best shape of my life, toned and strong! I am really looking forward to making my body a priority again, with the wedding acting as my motivator!
I love yoga, but I have also really thought about trying barre as well! I want to focus on strengthening my abs after my past C-section, and working on my arms for my strapless dress! If anyone has any workout suggestions for what they love - send them my way!
2. What is your favorite quote and what does it mean to you?
"Comparison is the thief of joy" - Theodore Roosevelt
Have truer words ever been spoken? I've spent a large piece of my life worrying entirely too much about what others were doing or saying. What they had, what I wanted and how unfair it was that my life was different than theirs. It is such an incredibly freeing feeling to let go of the constant pressure of competing and comparing yourself to others, and just thrive on your own!
Social media tends to really exasperate this problem, as it can be so easy to look at someone else's pictures and believe that their life is as perfect as the curated images show. I try to add a level of transparency to my social platforms and blogging, because my life is no where near perfect - and people should know that!
I love my life, and I am so grateful for the blessings I have been given and have worked hard for. But the biggest blessing is being happy and content in my own life, and not searching for improvement on the basis of comparison. I want to be healthy and fit for myself, and for my family. I like to look nice because it makes me feel sane, even when Target toddler tantrums happen (because THEY DO!) It's healthy to want to be a better version or yourself, but do it for yourself, and not for others!
3. What is your most prized possession?
Matthew gave me my Cartier diamond Love Bracelet the Christmas before Josie was born, as a sign of our love and commitment to each other. The only time I have ever taken it off since then was when it needed to be removed for my surgery with Josie.
I feel like this is such a challenging question, because overall what I treasure most in life are people and memories, not possessions. But, looking at my bracelet always brings me back to how excited and in love we felt upon finding out we were expecting our first child together - and how amazing it has been watching that love grow throughout the years together! It truly is a symbol of our love, and that is more precious than anything to me!
4. When it comes to your makeup application, cream or powder?
On a day to day basis I use NARS tinted moisturizing cream - which I wrote about in this post detailing my everyday makeup routine. But I am also very impressed with Kevyn Aucoin 'The Sensual Skin Enhancer' cream which I apply with this foundation brush when I need fuller coverage. The brush is obnoxiously expensive, but it creates a perfect photo-finish type look when I use the two together. I use this if my skin has a breakout and I need a heavier coverage, or if I have an event I'm going to where I know there will be photos taken.
5. What's one positive thing that blogging has brought to your life?
I love the sense of community I already feel after only blogging such a short amount of time! I have developed friendships with women across the country, and started chatting with some bloggers who I have been following for years!
It is also so reaffirming when I hear how much people are enjoying reading my blog! I have had family, friends and even old acquaintances whom I have not spoken to in years tell me how much they are enjoying reconnecting with me and reading about my life via Touch of Curl!
I truly love reading all the comments I receive, and encourage everyone to share your voices as often as you would like! So many of my most popular posts have come as suggestions from readers who have told me what they want to see! All of your support means more to me than you know!
6. Describe your personal style in one single word.
Woah that was hard. 1 word? 2 years ago I probably would have said glam, or bright. But these days I am proud to say my look has reached a place of effortless and relaxed style. I still have a closet filled with party dresses and stilettos, and I love finding the opportunity to dress up and put on some heels from time to time. But overall I am most comfortable in slouchy t-shirts, skinny jeans and a nice handbag. Most days I try to go for an elevated casual look, but it's still overall a relaxed feel. These days I've switched out the 5 inch Gucci boots for some flat Stuart Weitzman OTK's. You can still look chic as hell while being practical :)
7. What is one piece of advice you would give someone who has just started blogging?
Be authentic! When I started writing my first few posts I felt like I needed to be so serious in my writing so that it would sound more sophisticated. I soon figured out that my authentic voice was not only easier to write in, but much more fun to read! I love the way my personality comes out in my writing, and I hope my readers do as well!
8. What's your favorite guilty pleasure TV show?
SO easy - Keeping up with the Kardashians ALL DAY. No shame, I have been 'keeping up' since 2007 and I even have Matthew addicted now! Saint West anyone? Opinions??
9. What's your favorite piece in your wardrobe?
Too hard - I can't do it! Why would you ask me to play favorites with my closet - that's like asking someone to pick a favorite child!
The thought that immediately comes to mind is my outerwear collection. I love leather jackets (or all jackets in general!) and I regularly search consignment stores for new treasures. If I had to pick one piece, I would probably go with my Rick Owens blistered leather jacket, or my Celine camel leather - both bought on consignment! But I'm also really obsessed with this Leopard fall coat by Chloé which I got on TheRealReal.
10. How did you pick your blog's name?
My curls are kind of my 'thing'. I'm sure everyone has one feature, or thing about themselves that they receive the most compliments on - for me, it's always been my hair. Some days when I have the time I curl all of it, while other days I just do a little touch up. This had become a little saying in our house - when we would be getting ready to leave somewhere, Matthew would see my curling iron was on and look at me like - I thought we were about to leave? I would just say, I'm just doing a touch of curl, it will be fast.
And there you have it, Touch of Curl was born!
